Beijing 2008 - Resting up
Today we had a very relaxed day. It was well deserved and much needed and I truly believe that this will work to our advantage as this tournament wears on. We had training at noon which consisted of swimming about 2,000 meters. The pace was slow and relaxed and we allowed the guys to swim as fast or as slow as they wanted to. I wanted the training to be relaxed and fun with no real thinking required today. I feel like we all needed a mental as well as a physical break.
I went over to watch beach volleyball this morning with a few of the guys. We watched the women’s semi final match. Misty May and Kerri Walsh completely destroyed the Brazilian team that they played. I was shocked by how much better they were then their competitors. I was impressed by the best team on the sand. My daughter Leanna (who plays club volleyball) was also very impressed. I could tell that she really enjoyed having the opportunity to see Misty and Kerri play. It was truly an inspiration for her. That is one of the best thing about the Olympic Games – how it inspired young kids to dream about being the best and the possibilities that lie ahead in their lives. My daughter is very artistic and loves painting and poetry. I have had the chance to read some of her recent poems and she writes about being the fastest and jumping the highest. It is a nice feeling as a parent to see that your child has been inspired.
The staff also went over to the women’s water polo semi final and watched our USA team defeat Australia in a tight match. On Thursday they will have a chance to play for the gold. It would be great for USA Water Polo if both the men’s and the women’s teams were to make the gold medal game. Our women have been one of the best team’s in the world for years. This is new territory for the men. We have not been on the podium for 20 years and now we are so close to getting back there that I can taste it. We can win this thing – we really can. It will not be easy but we are in a good spot. We have a few days to rest our bodies and re focus our minds and then we will be ready to give it our best shot on Friday.
Tomorrow we will have one training session in the middle of the day. We will do a light weight workout followed by a two hours in the pool. We have created quite a stir in the water polo world by finishing first in our bracket. I understand that we have a large group of reporters and TV crews coming to practice tomorrow. That should be fun for the guys. I am very proud of this team and I can see that they are not done. They are hungry for more. They have tasted some success and want to take advantage of the opportunity in front of us. It will come down to a weekend tournament. We will play Friday night (I believe that our game is scheduled for 7:40 pm here in Beijing – or 4:30 am back home) and then we will play on Sunday afternoon for the gold! I am feeling pretty good about being there….
GO USA! See you at the pool!
