Here we go...
5/26/09
Day one full time training. It is time to get back to work and see if we can get this team ready for World Championships this summer. Over the past few weeks, our top players have been arriving back from Europe as their perspective club seasons end. It has been exciting to see the guys again. It seems like Beijing was a long time ago.
It is time to get to work and set some new goals with these guys. Back to the Podium does not work anymore. Our goal is to do something that USA Men’s Water Polo has never done and that begins this summer. The World Championships in Rome represent the first opportunity for us to raise the bar. We have never won a medal in the World Championships. Our goal is not only to win a medal but to win the GOLD. Once everyone has returned from Europe, we will have 10 out of 13 players from our Olympic Team that have committed to play this summer. Brandon Brooks, Rick Merlo and Peter Hudnut have all decided to either retire or take the summer off. They will be missed and we have some big shoes to fill.
There is opportunity within our team for a few new players to come on board and make a name for themselves. Training will be exciting as there will be tough competition for spots on the team. This week we will be training with the World University Games team. These players have been selected over the past few months and represent the best of our college ranks. They will be a good training partner and we will finish off the week with two games against this team. The first will be Saturday (May 30th ) at Oaks Christian HS at 4:00 pm and the second will be Sunday (May 31st) at Corona Del Mar HS at 6:00 pm. If you are around and want to see some high quality water polo please come out and support the team.
Next week, we will be going up north to train with Serbia. We will have three friendly ( I hope they’re friendly) matches. The first will be June 4th at UOP at 7:00 pm, the second at Cal at 3:00 pm on June 6th, and the final match at Stanford at 2:00 pm on June 7th. Once again, tell your friends and let’s try to get some good crowds out there for these games. This will represent a rematch of the semi-final game in Beijing.
The summer will go by very fast as we will play the World League Finals in Monte Negro in the middle of June and come back home to train for two and a half weeks before we go to Rome for the World Championships.
See you at the pool!
